Thursday August 04, 2016

2016 marks the 11th anniversary of the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival, which has raised 1.65 million dollars for Vermont cancer-related programs. This year five South Burlington teams, The Evolution Human Capital Lake Lizards, The IBEW Solar Dragons, The Merchants Bank Hakuna Ma TATAS, Cancer Canknot, and the Allscripts Rowdy Paddlers, are racing for fun and fundraising Saturday and Sunday, August 6 and 7, at Burlington’s Waterfront Park. Each team is comprised of 20 paddlers and a drummer. Teams race in a full sprint, head to head in 41-foot-long dragon boats over a 200-meter course.

Saturday afternoon features nine breast cancer survivor teams from all over the U.S. and Canada, plus the Dragonheart Vermont Sisters teams, celebrating life and racing in a special 500-meter event. In the evening, Dragonheart Vermont hosts a Sunset Dragonfest Dance Party, which has a five dollar at-the-door ticket, but is free for racers who wear their festival shirts.

On Sunday there will be 62 community teams along with the nine breast cancer survivor teams competing for a total of over 1,400 paddlers. Sunday’s races start at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. with the presentation of the Champ Cup crowning the 2016 champions. This event is free and open to the public with entertainment, great food, prize drawings and raffles. For more information, visit
