Friday, October 4, during the Homecoming Weekend festivities, the fifth class of the Rebel Athletic Hall of Fame was formally inducted at an event hosted by the Sunset Ballroom. The evening began with a welcome from South Burlington High School Principal Patrick Burke, followed by the emcee, Mike Donoghue, a 1969 SBHS graduate of and award-winning news and sportswriter with The Burlington Free Press. Donoghue highlighted each inductee’s accomplishments through their high school sports careers after which each inductee was presented with a plaque and invited to speak. The inductees spoke of growing up in South Burlington, their families, coaches and special sports seasons during their high school years including lighthearted stories (even one about a belly dancer from the 1980’s), many special memories and a bit of history. Inductees, their families and special guests traveled from afar to be present for the ceremony. With over one hundred and fifty attendees, there were many reconnections made with former classmates and coaches.
Our 5th Rebel Hall of Fame class included 9 athletes, 1 coach and a team, SB’s first State Championship team- 1970 Varsity Football team, ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Many inductees attribute their personal, career and athletic successes in life to what they learned while at South Burlington High School. These inductees were also introduced at halftime during the Saturday evening football game.
The Hall of Fame Committee is asking for nominations for the next Rebel Athletic Hall of Fame class. Please go to the SB Alumni webpage where you will find nomination forms, criteria for nomination as well as a list of current Hall of Fame members. Nominations are due February 1, 2014. SB Alumni website: www.sbhs.sf.sbschools.net, follow the “Alumni” link.
The committee would like to thank Gary and Diane Provost, owners of Waterfront Catering at the Sunset Ballroom, for finding a space to hold our event at the last minute due to a fire at the Comfort Suites on Thursday, one day before the event. The job they did was tremendous and the Hall of Fame committee members are forever thankful to the Provosts for the great food and to the Holiday Inn on Williston Road for offering their space at the last minute.
