Local paddlers have been practicing their strokes for the 8th Annual Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday, August 4 at Burlington’s Waterfront Park from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont is the presenting sponsor for the popular summer event.  1,600 dedicated Vermonters will be racing 41-foot long dragon boats for an unforgettable day of fitness, fun, and fundraising. It’s all for fun, friendly competition, and to raise money for Dragonheart Vermont and Survivorship NOW, a cancer wellness program.

The festival has become one of Vermont’s most popular summer events with over 6,000 paddlers and spectators annually. Admission to the festival is free. There’s music, entertainment, food vendors, a silent auction, 50-50 raffle and more. The core of Dragonheart Vermont’s mission is to give back to the community and over the last 7 years the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival has donated over $655,000 to critical cancer programs in Vermont.

For 2013, festival proceeds will support Survivorship NOW, Dragonheart’s Network On Wellness, which helps to bridge the gap cancer survivors face between treatment and recovery. Survivorship NOW provides free opportunities for therapeutic programs, exercise classes, education, and networking to help cancer survivors and their caregivers be healthier and live well after their cancer diagnosis. These empowering classes have the strong endorsement of cancer survivors, doctors, and health care institutions in our area. Visit www.survivorshipnowvt.org for complete program information.

“Eight years ago I watched the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival from the shore,” reflects Phyllis Bartling, Captain of the Baystate Support Oars team. I have been in a boat ever since! All year I look forward to this one day of fun, camaraderie, love, competition, and yes, sweat! The spirit and excitement are infectious. The cause is sobering. And many of the Dragonheart team members are now my personal heroes. Where else can you find all that?”

Dragonheart Vermont is a breast cancer survivor dragon boat team working  to send out an inspirational message encouraging all cancer survivors to live life to the fullest after a cancer diagnosis. Dragonheart has grown to a 150-member team of breast cancer survivors and supporters who paddle together for life-affirming exercise and camaraderie.http://www.survivorshipnowvt.org/http://www.ridethedragon.org/media/8923/2010_10a.dhvt2009team.jpg
