Thursday October 27, 2011

More than 650 people from across the region joined the Alzheimer’s Association at the 2011 Chittenden County Walk to End Alzheimer’s event held in late September.

Participants raised $63,932 to fund critical Alzheimer’s research, as well as care, support and programming across the state. This event has nearly doubled in size since 2010 with just over 300 people helping to raise $33,000 in 2010.

“It is clear from the incredible success and attendance at this year’s event that Chittenden County has shown its commitment to the fight against Alzheimer’s,” said Joany Simonds of the Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont Chapter. “It is truly inspiring to see our community answer this call to action in support of the more than 11,680 Vermonters currently living with Alzheimer’s across our state.”

The Chittenden County Walk to End Alzheimer’s is one of seven across Vermont and thousands across the country in the united movement to reduce and eliminate Alzheimer’s disease. Statewide, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s has raised over $129,000. This year’s walk, formerly known as the Memory Walk, was described as Vermont’s call to action in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s today. In Chittenden County alone, there are nearly 3,000 people living with Alzheimer’s. For more information or to make a donation visit alz.org/walk.
