Two students from South Burlington High School recently received the top awards in an Audio Essay Contest held by the Burlington Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post. Keegan Black won first place and Courtney Banach placed second in the contest called National VFW Voices of Democracy.

To enter the contest, students had to write and record a speech to the theme and prompt for 2013-2014 .  This year’s theme was: “Why I’m Optimistic About our Nation’s Future”.

The students were encouraged to participate by veteran SBHS English teacher Karen Bohmann who teaches public speaking and has been working with the Burlington VFW Post for the last 15 years.

As the top winners, Banach and Black each received a trophy and a check from the VFW.
