Eight Orchard School first graders traveled to Montpelier to receive an award for their participation in the Vermont treasurer’s office program “Reading is an Investment.” Since over 25% of the school read books and completed reading logs provided through the program, they were entered into the drawing with 26 other VT schools for a 4 1/2 foot Vermont Teddy Bear. Students also met the governor and had a tour of the State House. Next up, a contest to decide their new friend’s name! Reading is an Investment is now in its third year and was used this year by 130 Vermont elementary schools and 30 public libraries. The program promotes both financial literacy and reading literacy through classroom and library instruction and through a personal reading program.
