The South Burlington boy’s team was crowned Division 1 state champions Saturday, edging out Burlington and Mount Mansfield with a team score of 125. The Rebels got standout performances in the field from Caleb Kasupski and Connor Young, but it was on the track that South Burlington simply blew away the competition. Sean MacDonald and Sidi Abdoulaye took first place finishes in the 800m and 3000m run, respectively, while the team of MacDonald, Jacob Bealieu, Jack Graham, and Damion Curtis blew away the competition with a victory in the 4x400m relay. The Rebels grabbed critical points in the 1500m run, where Patrick Hickey claimed a first place victory, closely followed in second and third place by Abdoulaye and MacDonald. The South Burlington team of James Gregoire, Brandon Moran, Joseph Staples, and Kevin Le also cruised to victory in the 4x800m relay. The South Burlington girls team turned in some equally impressive performances, though tied for fourth place overall as Essex surged ahead to be crowned champions. Kayla Gilding was critical to her team’s success; the junior took first place in the 200m and 400m dash, as well a victory in the long jump and a third place finish in the 100m dash. Teammate Katherine Cook finished fifth in the 3000m run, while Emylie Rose finished second in shot-put for South Burlington. The Rebels finished with an overall-team score of 50 points.
