Vermont Commons School (VCS) student Griffin Cannon of South Burlington is spending five weeks at the end of his spring semester in Washington, D.C. delving into the world of National Security and Defense. Cannon will be working with national security professionals at the Hudson Institute, a U.S. domestic and foreign policy tank. He states in his project outline, “I will engage in the process that goes into the publication of reports, preparation of testimony for Congress, and other activities done by think tanks such as the Hudson Institute. Working with highly educated experts in the field will greatly contribute to my understanding of various issues affecting American naval power as well as the country as a whole.”

Cannon’s trip to D.C. is part of the VCS Senior Projects Program. “Part of our mission is to move students out of the classroom and into the world,” says Mark Cline Lucey, Social Studies Department Chair and advisor to the VCS class of 2015. Lucey notes, “This is also a great way for our seniors to explore their own interests and possible paths of work and study.”

When Cannon returns to VCS he will make a presentation on his experience. Commenting on his project, he adds, “This area has been a passion of mine for years now and I think a greater understanding would be valuable both personally and for my future.”
