Pickleball’s 50th anniversary was recently celebrated at Szymanski Park with a social timed round robin and a serve contest, along with cake and refreshments. The South Burlington pickleball group has been playing for five years and started with only six players. They now boast upwards of 18 players or more at one time. Pickleball started in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, when then Congressman Joel Pritchard improvised a family game using ping-pong paddles on an old badminton court. The sport is a combination of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong and played with a whiffle ball and paddle on a badminton size court with a volleyball net lowered to 34 inches high. To find out where to play pickleball locally, visit the USA Pickleball Association at usapa.org. In addition, pickleball is listed in the city’s Recreation & Parks Fall/Winter Activities Guide and played at Szymanski Park on Wednesdays throughout October, morning and evening times.
