Burlington Insurance Agency, of South Burlington, and Co-operative Insurance Companies recently awarded a community grant to the Chamberlin Elementary School Library.  The $1,300 gift was awarded as part of Co-op’s Community Grants program.

Patrick Burke, SBHS principal and president of SB Schools Foundation said, ”When Mr. Bodette called looking to support SB schools I thought of Chamberlin.  The SB Schools Foundation has done a great deal supporting our students in middle and high school, so working with a donor to support an SB elementary school reflects our Foundation’s mission to support SB students from pre-school through graduation.”

Chamberlin School will use the money for the purchase of much-needed additional bookshelves for their ever expanding book selection.

Mrs. Cally Flickinger, Chamberlin Library Media Specialist said, “Our 260 students come to the Library Media Center each week for lessons in literacy (literature appreciation), technology integration and curricula-based research studies.  Each one of these initiatives require the use of hands-on materials namely fiction (picture and chapter) and non-fiction books.  These books need to be current, developmentally appropriate and of high interest to our diverse student population.  With our expanding collection, more shelving space will be greatly appreciated to ensure easy access.  Our students love to select books to hold, borrow, read and appreciate the many worlds that physical books take them.”

“We think Chamberlin School does great work for our community and our kids,” said Bill Bodette, of the Burlington Insurance Agency.  “We’re proud to support the efforts of our local South Burlington schools.”

Co-operative Insurance Companies’ Community Grants Program was established in 2004 to assist with community projects across Vermont and New Hampshire.  Through this program, Co-op partners with its agents and directors to provide funds for capital campaigns throughout the two states.

“Organizations like the Chamberlin School are meeting needs in the same communities that Co-op serves,” said Brad Fortier, Co-op’s senior vice president of Marketing & Underwriting.  “We think it’s important to do our part as neighbors to help them out, and this grant program is one more way we can do that.”

The Chamberlin School was one of five organizations to receive a Community Grant in 2011.
