Michael Cafiero of Orchard School won the 5-6 division at the 12th Annual Fall Classic Chess Tournament in Berlin, Vermont on November 10th. The tournament, which is unrated and open to players of all abilities from kindergarten through 12th grade, focuses on fun and sportsmanship. Cafiero’s win is especially impressive give the strong field of contenders, which included repeat state champion Ragulan Sivakumar, from Central School, who finished second. Ryan Anderson, also of Central School, finished in 9th place, just ahead of Jack Morgan, of Shelburne Community School. Zach Hinds of Grand Isle School and Patrick Slattery of Orchard School also made strong showings.
Sajani Sivakumar of Tuttle Middle School earned an impressive second place finish in the 7-12 division over friend and rival Eli Hinds, of Vermont Commons School, who finished third.
Strong showings in the K-2 division came from fourth place-finisher, Liam Slattery, and Simon Cafiero, who placed fifth.
All of these players compete in the Queen City Chess Club, which meets weekly (8:30-9:30 a.m.) in the Cafe at Healthy Living in South Burlington. The Club is free to join but players are asked to contact Paul Fitzgerald (email@example.com) before attending.
