Over the past couple of months, many actions have taken place to move the search process for a new City Manager forward. So far, a search committee has been designated whose members include Charlie Baker, Martin Kenny, Rene LaBerge, Jessica Louisos, Martha Lyons, Ellen Shapiro, Chris Smith, David Young, and John Wilking. Lisa Ventriss has been appointed to Chair the committee, Interim Deputy City Manager Tom Hubbard serves as the City staff liaison and clerk, and John Wilking is serving as vice chair.
The job description was posted earlier this month, and so far, 22 resumes have been received. In comparison, according to Wilking, who was involved in the search for the City’s prior City Manager, around 130 resumes were processed through the Vermont League of Cities and Towns last time. The committee’s intent is to rank all of the resumes, using the same qualities and characteristics used tin the search to identify the current interim city manager. Input from the community is being encouraged as well. This will help the committee identify the best types of questions to ask candidates.
The deadline for applications is August 1, and ranking will occur that week. Candidates will be identified and scheduled for interviews. Ideally, there will be 3-5 individuals who can undergo a second round of interviews if necessary. The goal is to have a short list to the City Council August 22 and final candidate recommendations in early September, leading to an official announcement by the City Council at its September 16 meeting.
“This is an aggressive schedule, but one that provides the timing necessary to complete this task based on the Interim Contract agreement currently in effect” Hubbard said.
