Avi Cohen, a senior at South Burlington High School, was selected to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair at the Vermont STEM Fair in March. His winning project was titled, “Identifying Inhibitors of PDE4B2 Mutant Enzymes and Inhibitor Specificity Using Schizosaccharomyces Pombe.” Cohen says it focuses on identifying and classifying PDE inhibitors that bind more specifically than current PDE inhibitory drugs and that such development could reduce side effects of currently used PDE inhibitors. “The main motivation for my work was the untapped potential of PDE inhibitory drug class.” The ISEF takes place in May in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Cohen remarked that he looks forward to learning “about the projects of my peers,” adding, “It is incredible to be around so many dedicated people that share my interests.” Soon to graduate, Cohen says he is currently deciding between attending Yale University or Stanford University for next year.
