“Consider yourself one of us” and enter the world of one of Charles Dickens’s most beloved characters - Oliver Twist. Lyric Theatre Company brings the musical version of this classic story to the Flynn MainStage for five performances April 11th through 14th, 2013.
Lyric’s 55-member cast, featuring 32 area youth and teens, hails from 17 Vermont communities. Twenty-six cast members are making their Lyric debut with this production. Leading players are Colchester Middle School 7th grader Jonny Barden in the title role, with Colchester High School sophomore Tim Lewis as The Artful Dodger and veteran Lyric performer and director Patrick Clow of Williston as Fagin. Serena Magnan O’Connell as Nancy and Mark Cranmer as Bill Sykes are also featured.
Timothy Maynes of South Burlington is the Artistic Director for Oliver! The show was choreographed by Kim Nowlan of Burlington. Music Director Martin Hain of Williston waves the baton for the orchestra. Rob Parzych of Winooski serves as Production Supervisor.
Timothy Maynes chose to direct this show for Lyric because he believes that Oliver! is a classic for a reason. It’s a rags-to-riches story that centers on a young boy who sees the best in everyone and is able to avoid slipping into the corruption of the world around him. For generations, readers and audience members have connected with Oliver’s struggles, the depraved world in which he lives, and, most importantly, his ability to rise above that world. Audience members should leave the show not only humming the memorable tunes (Where is Love?, Consider Yourself, As Long As He Needs Me, and many more), but also feeling a sense of hope that they, too, can rise above adversity.
While the cast is in rehearsal, more than 200 additional volunteers, representing nearly a dozen Vermont communities, are simultaneously working behind the scenes at Lyric’s warehouse in Williston’s Production Park. On any given night, you will find volunteers of all ages and backgrounds building set pieces, painting vibrant canvases, crafting props, sewing costumes, marking lighting cues, preparing hair and make-up designs, and doing other tasks necessary to mount the $100,000+ production. As Designer, Burlington resident Cheri Forsythe has created a multi-level set that will transport the audience to both the dark, seedy haunts and vibrant high-class neighborhoods of 1800’s London.
The South Burlington area is strongly represented in this show. Cast members who live, attend school and/or work in South Burlington include Kerstin Anderson, David Babbott, Soshannah Block, Christopher Hart, Noa Saunders, and Michael Tutt in the Ensemble; Vera Escaja-Heiss, Workhouse Gang; and sisters Hannah and Kailin Farrell, Fagin’s Gang. On the production side, volunteers who live and/or work in South Burlington include Roz Saunders, Assistant to the Director; Andy Pearson, Lighting Designer; Leigh Sweet, Master Electrician/Special Effects; Karyn Dubie, Props Co-chair; Erin Evarts, Hair Designer; and Kerry Farrell and Rita Myers, Costume Crew.
