Orchard Elementary School held its much anticipated Family Math Night, sponsored by the PTO, February 3. Held every February for the last five years, the evening is a math-themed family activity night which brings families together to celebrate the world of numbers in fun and sometimes silly ways that encourage creative thinking and a love of math.
At the event, each participant had a Math Night raffle ticket participation card featuring six empty circles which could be filled in by completing various activities. Families with Orchard students from kindergarten through fifth grade moved from table to table playing a variety of math games and activities, which reinforced math skills such as counting, graphing, estimating, money, and measurement. At the end of the night, the completed participations cards were entered into a raffle.
Favorite tables at Math Night included symmetry with Legos, graphing, and building 3D structures with marshmallows and toothpicks. Josie, an Orchard second grader, said, “I think there were a lot of fun activities and it made me realize the true purpose of math. Math can be really fun and it helps you learn new things”.
Math night was coordinated by Sandra Flemer, Orchard PTO’s treasurer and parent of a fifth grader. She said, “It was great to see so many families engaged in math games with their children. It’s my goal with students to change the mindset around math for reluctant learners. Math can be fun!” Flemer also coordinates Orchard’s “Math Club,” an afterschool club where students play math themed games and activities. The club, which takes place for eight weeks, once a year, is usually so popular that students enter a raffle to try to get a spot in that year’s club.
Over 100 families attended this year’s Math Night and every family went home with a dominoes game.
