The CSB Hawks Girls U10 hockey team won the Vermont State U10 Girls Championship March 5 in Woodstock, Vermont. The Hawks, who defeated the St. Albans Comets 6-1, completed a sweep of the tournament by winning their sixth straight game. Members of the winning team who hail from South Burlington are Kiley Burke, Sabrina Brunet, Gabby Douglas, Madeline Rugg and Maggie Tudor.
St. Albans kept the game close early on by stopping a flurry of shots and breakaways by the Hawks in the first two periods. With the score at 0-0, the Hawks fell behind early in the second 1 - 0, but regrouped and then tied the game with Sophie Brown’s first goal (unassisted) with 1:03 remaining. Going into the third period tied at 1-1, the defense led by Karina Bushweller, Sasha Miller, Sunshine Clark, and Georgia Wool stopped the Comet offense cold. Maggie Tudor came up with three big saves in net and shut St. Albans out for the rest of the game.
With the Hawks defense tightening, the offense was able to settle in and the floodgates opened. CSB relentlessly attacked the St. Albans zone and scored the next five goals. Brown scored at 3:08 of the third with a pass from Kiley Burke. A minute later, Maddie Rugg finished a great play with passes from Gabby Douglas and Sabrina Brunet (the team’s regular season scoring leader.) A minute and 17 seconds later, it was the Brown and Burke combo hitting yet again. Goal number five was scored by Brunet with assists from Bushweller and Megan Rexford. Brown finished the scoring by getting a great feed from Caroline Walsh.
The Hawks dominated the five games on their journey through the state tournament by out-scoring their opponents 21-1 with four shutouts, having defeated Barre, CSB Red, Essex, and St. Albans in the round robin. The Hawks then shut out Essex in the semi-final to earn a trip to Woodstock.
This amazing record and exciting championship could not have been achieved without the efforts of every player on the team including alternates Cait Bartlet (goalie) and Vittoria Pizzagalli who filled in during the season. The girls were proud to be led by their head coach Laurie Brown and assistant coaches Scott Bushweller and from South Burlington, Tom Rugg, and Sally Douglas. Congratulations to the CSB Hawks on a great season.
