At a recent ceremony in the Vermont State House hosted by Senator Patrick Leahy, Leahy and Congressman Peter Welch announced Thomas DeMag of South Burlington was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. A South Burlington High School student, DeMag’s parents are David and Alison Crowley DeMag.

In a joint statement, Leahy and Welch, along with Senator Bernie Sanders, said, “Applying for a service academy appointment is a rigorous process, and being nominated itself is an achievement. We are proud of the consistently high caliber of qualified applicants who step forward in Vermont to serve our country and to join our nation’s prestigious defense academies. They all make Vermont proud, and we wish them all the best as the academies now make their decisions.”

A member of Congress must nominate applicants to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. DeMag was nominated by Senator Leahy. The Vermont Delegation collaborates on vetting candidates to be nominated, and the decision on acceptance will be made by the academy later this year.
