Approximately 100 students from 15 middle schools competed individually and in teams, in written and fast-paced oral matches, on subjects that include probability, statistics, algebra and geometry during the annual MATHCOUNTS® Northwest Region Competition held February 11 at UVM. The winning SB students and schools were: School Team Win—Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School, 1st place, team members Alan Chiang, Sparsh Bhordwaj, Daniel Chang, Gabe Nelson, coached by John Radimer. Student Individual Winners (from F.H. Tuttle Middle School) 2nd place: Alan Chiang, 3rd place: Sajani Sivakumar, and 4th place: Sparsh Bhordwaj. Countdown Round Winners (from F.H. Tuttle Middle School) 1st place: Alan Ciang. George Sullivan, also from FHTMS, was awarded an Honorable Mention.
The top teams and individuals from each of the VT Regional Competitions will go on to compete in the statewide Competition to be held March 24 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph. The top 4 individuals from the State Competition will form the Vermont team which will travel to the 2012 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Florida May 11-13, 2012.
Geared for 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students, MATHCOUNTS® helps to ensure students success in higher education and provides them with opportunities in engineering and mathematics careers.
