The Burlington Garden Club (BGC) received a Certificate of Merit Award from the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont (FGCV) acknowledging their work in the Grandma and Grandpa Garden and eight other nearby beds at the Wheeler Homestead’s Vermont Garden Park on Dorset Street. In addition, BGC was recognized for their Growing Young Gardeners program, now titled Summer Youth Gardening, which welcomes children into the gardening world to learn how to plant, maintain, and harvest. The program, a collaboration with the University of Vermont’s Master Gardener’s Extension office, donated over 1,080 pounds of vegetables to the Food Shelf last summer.
BGC also received an award for garden therapy, recognizing the organization’s annual planting and maintenance of two gardens at the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington, a “home away from home” for families with seriously ill children seeking treatment at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital. This has been an annual club project since 2009. The third award was acknowledging the format and structure of the many BGC projects involving membership participation that benefit the community and meet the goals and objectives of the National Garden Clubs through the annual program booklet.
