Stefan Pierson, a 2011 graduate of South Burlington High School, was diagnosed last May with aggressive bone cancer in his leg.  Since then, he has had major surgery and difficult chemotherapy treatments, which are scheduled to continue at least through March, followed by extensive physical therapy. It has been an extremely rough year for him, both physically and emotionally. Treatment for his cancer has resulted in the removal of a portion of his tibia and knee, forever impacting his mobility and forcing some major life changes.

Stefan was a stand-out soccer player and alpine skier for SBHS and was 2011 captain for both varsity teams.  An avid outdoorsman, Stefan participated in a variety of sports and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at age 15.

A friend and former classmate, Alex Saunders, wanted to find a way to help motivate Stefan to get through treatment and focus on the future. Knowing that Stefan has always dreamed of attending the Soccer World Cup games, she is working with Stefan’s family on a fundraising effort called “Stefan’s Wish”, with the goal of sending him to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Fundraising events will be held at SBHS on Saturday, February 9th at 1:00 at the N.V.A.C Dance Team Championships, and on Saturday, February 16th  at the N.V.A.C Cheerleading Competition. Volunteers for “Stefan’s Wish” will sell handmade winter hats, headbands and cards at both events.  Please stop by and show your support for Stefan.

A website to collect donations has also been set up. If you are interested in making a donation, please visit
