The South Burlington Veterans Committee is honored to provide an update on the progress of the proposed South Burlington Veterans Memorial at Dorset Park, which is being built with donations and contributions from our community members. It is a $170,000 project, and the Committee is happy to report that fundraising efforts and in-kind donations to date have raised all but $25,000 of the cost. We are so close to completing the fundraising and reaching the start of construction. Please help us reach our goal!
The Memorial will consist of three separate structures placed around a “Pathway of Honor” to venerate all veterans, past and present, and to create a place to provide a meaningful experience for visitors. The first commemorative is a larger-than-life dog tag designed by local artist Kirk Williams, and is made of stainless steel. The inscription will read, “A Pathway of Honor for all Veterans”. The second memorial is a 10-foot tall steel cylinder, the product of South Burlington resident and designer, Robert Vogel. The theaters of war are carved out in large letters around the column, and with sunlight or an evening spotlight, the letters will reflect on the stone base. The third monument was created by Kuhn Memorials of South Hero. It is a Vermont granite sculpture featuring brass insignias of all the branches of service. The inscription on this monument will read:
THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH BURLINGTONDEDICATE THIS MEMORIAL TO ALLVETERANS WHO HAVE SERVED OURCOUNTRY WITH HONOR
ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL
There are many ways to help complete the SB Veterans Memorial:
• Make a tax deductible donation to the Veterans Memorial Fund. Cash or checks (payable to the City of South Burlington – Veterans Memorial Fund) are accepted at the South Burlington Recreation Department, 575 Dorset Street, South Burlington, Vermont, 05403, 846-4108.
• Plan on participating in the 15th Annual South Burlington Rotary Golf Tournament, which will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013 at the Vermont National Country Club in South Burlington. The South Burlington Rotary Club has generously named the South Burlington Veterans Memorial as their primary benefit charity for this popular event. Grab three of your friends and enroll as a foursome! Title and Major sponsorships, as well as tee, green, and golf cart sponsorships are also available. Donated goods and services are also being accepted for inclusion in the silent auction. Contact South Burlington Rotary member Don Jenkins for more information, firstname.lastname@example.org or 233-2676.
• Purchase an Engraved Paver in the name of a Veteran you would like to honor. The Veteran does not need to be a South Burlington resident or have fought in a war. Engraved pavers will be placed along the “Pathway of Honor” at the base of each of the 3 structures and cost $75 (for a 4x8”) and $150 (for an 8x8”). The deadline for the pavers is May 31st and more information on the pavers is found at the South Burlington Recreation & Parks Department, on our website at www.sbremembers.org or by contacting Lisa Levite at email@example.com or 860-1506.
• Would your employer consider naming the South Burlington Veterans Memorial as the benefit charity of a fundraiser that they sponsor, or would they make a donation to the Memorial Fund? Contact Veterans Memorial member Jay Zaetz at firstname.lastname@example.org or 658-3494 for more information.
The Veterans Memorial at Dorset Park is a fitting tribute to the men and women, past and present, who have served our great country. This is a Memorial for everyone in our community to enjoy. More information about the Memorial may be found at our website, www.sbremembers.org or by calling the South Burlington Recreation & Park Department at 846-4108 and ask them to send you a brochure.
