Harry Hopper and Nathan Kakalec are the recipients of the 2015 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). The award is designed to promote and develop community service, leadership skills, cultural awareness, competency, responsibility, and global citizenship. The South Burlington Rotary Club awards RYLA annually; South Burlington High School teachers, and staff select the recipients.
This past summer, Hopper and Kakalec attended the RYLA three-day conference at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont. They participated along with other leadership-minded peers from New England and Canada. The weekend was filled with activities that were fun, challenging, and educational yet designed to support development as leaders among their peers, school and community.
During the conference, Hopper and Kakalec participated in a PolioPlus fundraiser, which is a worldwide Rotary International program to help eradicate polio. In addition, attendees competed in a talent show and the weekend ended with group presentations. Travis Roy, motivational speaker and founder of the Travis Roy Foundation, gave the keynote speech imparting wisdom, humor, and sage advice to all.
After their return, Hopper and Kakalec made a presentation to the South Burlington Rotary Club sharing their experience and thanking them for the RYLA award and the opportunity to attend the conference.
