The Rebels got shutout by Essex 4-0 this past week. The Hornets broke the game open with two goals in the second period. Goalie Michael Baechle made 22 saves for South Burlington in the game. With the loss, the Rebels fall to 5-3-3 on the season.
The Rebels skated to a 2-2 tie against Mount Mansfield this past Wednesday. Katie Young led her team by scoring both of South Burlington’s goals in the game, the second coming with five minutes remaining in regulation to force the tie. Josie Toof assisted Young on the late-game equalizer, and South Burington’s solid defense was led by Erin Church, who made 32 saves in goal for the Rebels. With the tie, South Burlington is 4-7-1 on the season.
The Rebels couldn’t keep up with the fast paced Green Knights offense, as Rice broke out to a 23-4 lead in the first quarter on the way to defeating South Burlington 71-51 last week. The Rebels battled as a team throughout the game, with nine different players scoring in the contest but South Burlington struggled to find an answer for Rice’s Eliot Nelson, who went 5-5 from beyond the three point line in the game. Liam McMackin led South Burlington in scoring with eight points. South Burlington falls to 4-10 on the season with the loss.
Trailing 45-34 after three quarters, the Rebels battled back to a four point deficit before ultimately falling to Essex 55-51 last week. Emma MacDonough had a game-high 18 points for the Rebels, while teammate Allie Bosley added nine points, and both players hit a pair 3-point shots in the fourth quarter to ignite South Burlington’s comeback attempt. With the loss, the Rebels even their record at 6-6 on the season.
Indoor Track and Field
The South Burlington boys dominated in the second meet of the season at Norwich University, Saturday. The Rebels scored 78 points as a team, cruising past second place finisher Essex by a full 23 points. The South Burlington girls team finished sixth out of the seventeen competing teams, with a team score of 23. Ben Moran finished 1st in the boy’s 600m dash with a time of 1:27.4, while teammate Bobby Hall finished 6th in the event. Rebels finished 2nd-4th in the 1600 meter run, with Jackson Hauman, Tom Dustira, and Lucas Calcagni finishing in the respective pole positions, while Gabe Nelson raced to a 1st place finish in the 3200m run with a winning time of 10:35.42. The 4x200 team of Olivia Dickinson, Cameron Peyko, Odessa O’Brien, and Cora Kakalec took a 2nd place finish with a time of 1:52.60, while the boy’s team of Brandon Lee, Josh Webster-Heenan, Ryan Sargent, and Nevil Desai finished 3rd in the same event. The Rebels will return to Norwich next week for the state championship meet on Saturday 1/30 at 1pm.
On Saturday January 22 South Burlington JV and Varsity Dance teams attended Mt Anthony Union High School for their second competition of the season. They succeeded in winning first place in both Varsity Pom and Jazz and overall JV.
