Young golfer and South Burlington resident Cooper King, age 9, attended the New England Professional Golf Association (NEPGA) Drive Chip Putt Qualifier at the Links at Lang Farm, July 3.
In the 7-9 category he won first place for the drive and first place for the chip. He tied for first place overall, but won second place, as the highest putt score determined the winner. He and two other young golfers move on to the sub regional NEPGA Qualifier at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, Mass. Wednesday, August 6. South Burlington was also represented by two boys in the 7-9 age group at the qualifier, Evan Marchessault and Brady Havers. The winner at Pinehills will play at the Regional qualifier at Bethpage State Park Golf Course in N.Y. at the end of August and if he further advances, goes to the finals at Augusta National Golf Course in April 2015. Cooper King won a junior membership to the Kwiniaska Golf Club last year by writing an essay about the life lessons in golf, as reported in The Other Paper last summer. He said that the membership really helped him prepare for this event and is thankful to have won it!
