FairPoint Communications presents the first Everybody Wins! Vermont community read-a-thon in Chittenden County. Hosted by the South Burlington Community Library (SBCL), the read-a-thon, a free family event which entices children and families to read books to one another out loud, is Sunday, February 5, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Hundreds of books will be available in different categories. Children accumulate gold coins for each book read, which makes them eligible for prizes from Phoenix Books in an end-of-the-day drawing. In addition to Vermont singer songwriter Jon Gailmor providing entertainment, each child will be given a free book to take home from Everybody Wins! Vermont.
SBCL Director Jennifer Murray says, “The library is looking forward to offering this fabulous opportunity to share books and support learning. It will be so exciting to have readers in every corner of the library!”
Murray notes the library will be open only for this event, but check-out will be available, so she reminds everyone to bring their library card, or get one at the read-a-thon. The South Burlington Recreation and Parks Department will assist at the event and there is an expected visit from the Lake Monsters’ Champ. Volunteers from GE will also be on hand to help out.
A similar read-a-thon event in Montpelier is now in its 12th year and draws 150 to 200 people annually. This year, that event will be held Saturday, February 11, at National Life.
Everybody Wins! Vermont brings volunteer adults and children together in schools across the state to read. Each adult mentor reads with the same child over lunch once a week for the entire school year, and often for several years in a row. Four Chittenden County schools host Everybody Wins! mentoring sites including Edmunds Elementary, J.J. Flynn Elementary, the Sustainability Academy, and Shelburne Community School.
