The Green Mountain Athletic Association (GMAA) recently announced Sean MacDonald received the 2015 GMAA Scholarship. MacDonald graduated in June from South Burlington High School (SBHS).
While at SBHS, MacDonald ran varsity cross-country and track and was the captain of the cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track teams for both his junior and senior years. He is also a track coach for the South Burlington Parks and Recreation Department. He says that running has helped him “stay healthy, to compete, to learn, and to meet friends for life.” MacDonald plans to study economics at Bowdoin College, and has been recruited to run track and cross-country.
MacDonald is one of two graduating high school seniors who each received a GMAA $750 scholarship based on their running history and their intent to continue their running careers in college. Funds for the scholarship are raised through the annual 5K Cross Country Scholarship Run, held in August in Burlington’s Red Rocks Park.
Established in 1976, GMAA supports athletes of all ages and abilities in the sport of running. Sponsoring a full slate of races throughout Vermont, they are also one of the founders and a continuing supporter of the Vermont City Marathon.
