South Burlington violinist Katie Merrick was recently presented by the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association with the Aaron Xue Friendship Award at the Vermont Youth Philharmonia Spring Concert, held at the Elley-Long Music Center.
Established by the Xue family in memory of Aaron, a cellist in Vermont Youth Philharmonia (VYP) who died in 2009, the annual award recognizes a student who is a supportive colleague, role model, and true friend to their peers in Vermont Youth Philharmonia.
A tenth grade student at South Burlington High School, Merrick has played the violin for ten years. She is an enthusiastic member of Vermont Youth Philharmonia whose musicianship has been inspired by the close friends and fellow musicians she has met during her five years as a member of the VYOA. She also greatly enjoys working with VYP conductor Anne Decker.
Merrick plans to continue playing music with the VYOA. She currently studies the violin with Carolyn Bever.
