The VT Youth Orchestra Association concluded their 2011–12 concert season with the presentation of several scholarships to VYOA students.
SB violinist Basundhara Mukherjee was presented with the Aaron Xue Friendship Award at the VT Youth Philharmonia Spring Concert, held at the Elley-Long Music Center. Established by the Xue family in memory of Aaron, a VYP cellist who died in 2009, the annual award recognizes a student who is a supportive colleague, role model, and true friend to their peers in Vermont Youth Philharmonia. This award is chosen by the recipient’s fellow orchestra members. Basuhdhara is a tenth grade student at South Burlington High School who has been a member of the VYOA for four years. A favorite moment of the past season for her was performing selections from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the VYO Chorus during December’s Orchestrapalooza concert. She describes it as a perfect storm of unification between orchestra, chorus and music; a moment that gave her goosebumps. “Since that moment,” she says, “VYP has not been the same… it’s just gotten better!”
