For the second year in a row, the Orchard neighborhood rallied to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The benefit sale, held mid-October raised over $2,700, a 35 percent over last year’s fundraising effort. Orchard’s neighbors and community members across South Burlington donated a wide variety of high quality furniture, home and garden decor, sporting goods, and more. Shoppers made donations to enjoy homemade baked treats plus bacon hot dogs donated by Vermont Smoke & Cure with rolls courtesy of Freihofer’s Bakery Outlet. Additional support was provided by Penske Truck Rentals.

“I am just so proud to have the best neighbors and friends” stated Mary Gleason, who had the inspiration for the neighborhood project. “This is a big event which requires people storing items in our small garages prior to the sale, picking up some items, talking it up to friends and neighbors, having pricing days, setting up at 6:30 a.m. in the dark and doing multiple jobs that day. Everyone comes together and works hard to raise this money for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. It is definitely great team work! Also, I am fortunate that my employer, Northfield Savings Bank, supports me by letting me use the bank parking lot to hold this great event.”

All of the sale’s proceeds were donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont Chapter and the 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Unsold merchandise was donated to Sweet Charity, a hospice resale shop located in Vergennes. Plans for the 3rd Annual Orchards Benefit Sale are underway for October 2017.
