For the past 20 years, the running track at Orchard School has been a very popular feature with students. The children from Kindergarten up to fifth grade heavily use it both at recess and in physical education classes. However, this continued extensive use had taken a toll. There were potholes and dips from the many feet pounding at high speed on its stony surface. This together with poor drainage resulted in puddles, mud, and grass growing up the middle of the track.
Orchard School Principal Mark Trifilio approached the PTO at the end of the past school year to ask if they could help fund the much-needed renovations to the track. The required work included rebuilding what was there, laying a new foundation and repairing the top layer. Trifilio reached out to J. Hutchings, Inc., contractors who were already at the school this summer working on drainage issues, and they provided a very reasonable bid to renovate the track. Using combined funding from students raising money for sustainability projects (Mrs. Bahrenburg’s 4th grade class, 2014-2015) and the PTO, the result is a new and improved running track for the students to enjoy for many years to come.
