Squeals of delight emanated from students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Orchard School as they joined over ten million others in a worldwide initiative to learn some basic concepts in computer programming by participating in an “Hour of Code.” This national event, held during Computer Science Education Week (December 9 – 15) offered game-like, self-directed tutorials that included video tips from notables such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook. Working in collaborative teams, students learned basic computer language as they challenged themselves to move characters through mazes. Orchard students found out that anyone, of any age, can learn to code. More information may be found at http://csedweek.org.
