The high school alpine skiing season wrapped up with The State Championship giant slalom held at Middlebury Snow Bowl on March 3 and the slalom at Burke Mountain on March 5. This year featured a new format with the girls and boys participating on the same day in the same event. The SBHS team capped one of its most successful seasons in recent history, with the girls team placing 3rd and the boys 4th overall in Vermont. Highlights of South Burlington’s individual performances were freshman Annika Nielsens 3rd place in giant slalom followed by freshman Ava Hultgren in 12th, freshman Madi Grabowski in 24th, junior Ali Barron in 38th, freshman Ellie Hall in 61st and junior Nicole Turner in 70th. In the girls slalom The Rebels were also led by Nielsen’s 4th place finish, Hultgren 11th, Grabowski 19th, Barron 39th, Turner 51st and Hall 58th. On the boy’s side in giant slalom, freshman Steven Cone conquered the demanding Allen Trail course at Middlebury in 18th place, with seniors Jack Barron and Jackson Hall in 22nd and 27th respectively, sophomore Gunnar Nielsen in 29th, freshman Rudd Rexford in 55th and junior Keegan O’Hara in 60th. In the boys slalom, Cone paced The Rebels in 11th place followed by Nielsen in 24th, Barron in 29th O’Hara in 32nd and Hall in 44th.
Coach Al Dworshak was pleased with this year’s team performance saying, “this group understood from the beginning that individual focus and effort creates team results. They carried a quiet confidence into races which gained momentum as the season progressed and culminated with some wonderful results at district and state championships. This team truly skied to its potential in those big events. This is a very young team with a bright skiing future here at SBHS”.
The Vermont All State Ski Team was announced with SBHS student Annika Nielsen being named to the 1st Team and team mates Ava Hultgren and Steven Cone as Honorable Mentions. Nielsen, Hultgren and Cone also qualified for Eastern High School Championships in New Hampshire.
