May is always a special one for SB Mentoring since it marks the date of their annual Spring Celebration, an afternoon of games, crafts, food, and fun. This year’s event was held at Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School where most of the 60 young leaders and 60 mentors joined volunteers from the South Burlington Police Department, South Burlington Fire Department, South Burlington Community Library, South Burlington Recreation Department, the South Burlington High School dance team and boys lacrosse team.
According to the young leaders, highlights of the afternoon included having the high school students attend and the range of activities. One mentor noted the “positive energy and commitment” at the event, while another reflected, “What the Spring Celebration gave to me was some invaluable experiences with my young leader, a great deal of appreciation, a feeling of pride and a connectedness with others.”
SB Mentoring is the South Burlington School District’s school-based mentoring program that matches wonderful students in grades K-9 with caring, respectful adults to allow young people to find their “sparks,” their passions and interests. The program is actively recruiting new mentors for the 2017-2018 school year. For further information, please contact SBSD Healthy Schools coordinator Susie Merrick at firstname.lastname@example.org.
