South Burlington resident Haley Langan was invited to participate in a try-out camp for the Women’s U-20 National Rugby Team that will be representing the United States at the Nations Cup in London, England this summer. The camp will be held on March 23-24 in Herndon, Virginia.
Haley, a junior at Rice Memorial High School, started playing rugby her freshman year for the South Burlington Women’s Rebel Rugby Team. That same year, she was selected to play for the Vermont Select Side Rugby Team in the New England Rugby Tournament. During her sophomore year, Haley was chosen as one of the captains of the Women’s Rebel Rugby Team. She helped the Women’s Rebel Rugby Team capture the Vermont High School Rugby Championships. Haley was also selected to represent Vermont in the New England Select Side Rugby Tournament, where the Vermont Team finished in third place, out of eight teams. Haley is a forward and plays Eight Man for the Rebel Rugby Team and Second Row (LH Lock) for the Vermont Select Team and the US U20 Team.
In the summer before her junior year while attending the Penn State Rugby Camp, Haley was chosen as “Rugby Player of the Week.” At the camp, she was also recruited by Pete Steinberg, the US Women›s National Rugby Team Head Coach, to attend the US U20 Women›s Rugby Development Camp. The Development Camp was run by Danielle Miller, the U-20 National Team Coach and was held July 21 to July 31, 2012, at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center in New York. She was picked to play on the U-20 National Team in the CanAm Rugby Tournament in Saranac Lake, New York. In this tournament she scored two tries. Coach Miller indicated that “Haley was very coachable and a quick learner. And she represented the United States well in the tournament.” Following the Camp and the Tournament, Haley was placed in the U-20 National Team Rugby Player Pool.
Haley would like to thank her High School coaches Tiffany Renaud, Theresa Bertram, and Kevin O’Brien, for teaching her how to play rugby and supporting her throughout her rugby career. Without her coaches’ support and guidance, Haley might not have gotten the opportunity to try-out for the Women’s U-20 National Nation’s Cup Rugby Team.
