The Titans Bobsled team took the silver medal in their weight range and second overall in the 33rd Empire State Games on Sunday, February 10th at Mt Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, NY. The team, comprised of brothers Joseph and Theodore Gonyaw of South Burlington, were edged out of 1st place by Team Superfast of New York.
Theodore, a sophomore at SBHS, is completing his second year in the bobsled program and is the push starter for the team. Joseph, a 7th grader at FHTMS, is in his first year of competition and is the driver for the Titans. The brothers practice each Sunday at the Olympic facility in Lake Placid. Even though they start from the half way point on the course, they reach speeds of over 60 mph.
“Our mom didn’t want us to play football, so she got us involved in bobsledding. It is an adrenaline rush that takes both focus and athleticism; and in the end, I still figured out a way to play football!” said Theodore.
