It was early February when the voting members from the 9 chapters of Vermont DECA decided on the members of their new leadership team; the 5 members chosen were all from South Burlington High School Neerja Patel, Nirali Desai, Nevil Desai, Isaac Cohen, and Ateev Nahar. Vermont DECA is one of several career and technical student organizations throughout Vermont that prepares students in the business professions of management, finance, hospitality, entrepreneurship, sales and marketing.
These five SBHS students have been working since then on organizing and hosting the Vermont DECA Fall Leadership Conference, “Emerging Business Leaders through DECA.” From monthly meetings, inviting speakers or creating registration forms, they took complete ownership of the event. Lynn Amey, who teaches Business Education and Finance at SBHS, serves as the students’ chapter advisor.
The culmination of their efforts were demonstrated Tuesday, September 30, with over 168 registered students, 185 registered attendees, the attendance of the DECA Inc. Executive Director Paul Wardinski from Reston, Va. and a special appearance from Lieutenant Governor Phil Scott.
Their leadership term has begun with tremendous success and they are looking forward to leading the State Competitions to be held in February 2015.
