The South Burlington High School Scholar’s Bowl Team has qualified for the final rounds of the Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl, the state’s high school question-and-answer academic championship The team scored well during the preliminary playoff rounds in January, winning four of its five matches to advance.
The Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl season will wrap up with 12 matches March 29 at the University of Vermont, the last of which will crown the 31st annual state champion. Matches will be held at the Campus Center Theatre and Fleming Museum starting at 10 a.m. and continuing every 40 minutes until the championship match at 2:45 p.m. Thirteen schools are competing for the title after posting records of 3-2 or better at first-round playoffs.
Defending champion Essex owns the top seed and a bye into the semifinals after going 5-0 in the prelims, while South Burlington, Burlington, Middlebury, Champlain Valley and Mt. Abraham will start in the quarterfinals. The seven other finalists will compete for the Medlar Cup and the final berth in the quarterfinals. South Burlington’s quarterfinal match versus the winner of the Medlar Cup will start at 12:40 p.m.
Since the 1983-84 school year, the Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl has been challenging teams of high school students to show their smarts in a fast-paced question-and-answer format.
