South Burlington High School (SBHS) students, Sparsh Bhardwaj, Phil Holt, Patrick Ryan, Liam Lustberg, David Spargo and Ananth Malladi took part in the Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl finals held recently at the University of Vermont. Essex High School, overcoming an early 115-point deficit, defeated Burlington and captured its third straight state high school academic championship. The SBHS team won The Medlar Cup, the tournament’s second-tier competition, by defeating teams from Mount St. Joseph Academy, Mount Mansfield Union High School and Rice Memorial High School.

The Scholars’ Bowl is a school year-long competition sponsored by the Vermont Chapter of the National Education Association, which has been testing the state’s brightest high school students since the 1983-84 school year.
