South Burlington resident Junior Serwili, a seventh grader at Saint Francis Xavier School in Winooski, received special recognition at the Vermont State Science and Math Fair held on April 13 at Norwich University. Junior was one of ten students from his middle school competing against hundreds of students in middle schools and high schools from across Vermont.
Serwili was awarded a Silver Medal for Excellence from the Vermont Principals Association for his project which examined the effect of colored light on the efficiency of photovoltaic cells.
In addition to the silver medal award, Junior also won $500 from AllEarth Renewables for the best project in either wind or solar energy for the entire state science fair.
All Saint Francis Xavier School students from grade four to grade eight participate in a school wide science fair under the guidance and tutelage of middle school science teacher Mary Ellen Varhue. The top middle school projects are then presented at the Vermont State Science and Math Fair.
