The students at Rick Marcotte Central School (RMCS) were greeted by players of the University of Vermont Women’s (UVM) Basketball team along with their mascot, Rally, during a recent school wide C.A.R.E.S. Assembly.  5th Grade Teacher, Annick Cooper introduced the assembly with a shared greeting to welcome the team.  Mrs. Cooper has made a very special connection with the UVM Women’s Basketball team this year.  The team will visit the school again soon to read to the children in their classrooms and also lead another assembly.

C.A.R.E.S. stands for Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy and Self-Control.  These values are taught to the children so that they can practice them in their daily lives at school and at home.  The C.A.R.E.S. tradition continues at Rick Marcotte.  On school assembly days, students and teachers wear their grade specific t-shirts.  Every two years, a new logo is introduced.  This year, 4th grader Greta Heldman designed the new t-shirt featuring RMCS’s mascot Marky the Moose.

During the assembly, UVM Women’s Head Basketball Coach, Lori Gear McBride talked to the students about how the C.A.R.E.S. values related to the everyday lives of the team members so that they can be successful as well.  When students were asked what they felt were some of the important things that the players focused on, the students responded saying “teamwork”, “being good at basketball”, “honesty”, “playing hard and scoring”.  Each player had the opportunity to address the students.  They taught them that it is not only important to be a great athlete, but it is also about being the most well- rounded person that you can be.  The students then watched a video of the players in action during some of their basketball games.

The morning came to a close with Rally and Marky playing a game while cheered on by the students and players.  The students shared their school song “where everybody is somebody” with the UVM team.  It is not only their song but also the school’s motto which welcomes and greets all visitors to the  Rick Marcotte Central School.
