Can you sing, dance, or tell a good joke? Do you have a hidden talent that you’re ready to share with your neighbors? If so, the South Burlington Knights of Columbus want to invite you to showcase your gift in their new variety show called “God Given Talent.”
On October 19th, the Knights kick off this new monthly event at their hall on Berard Drive. The design of their event harkens back to a simpler time when the community came together to share coffee and dessert, and hear and see their neighbors share their various talents.
“The goal is simple,” says Patrick Leduc, the coordinator of this new program for the Knights, “We want to create a place where all parts of our community, regardless of age, heritage, or other differences can come together, get to know each other, enjoy family-friendly entertainment, and deepen our common respect and understanding of one another.”
The Knights’ approach is about creating opportunities. If you’re working on your talent and need a place to hone your skill, you now have a place. If you are looking for low-cost and fun-filled things to do with your family and friends, this is also a place for you. But the Knights think the greatest opportunity may just be the gathering together of community, with no other agenda than to revel in the arts. They may just be onto something, too. Consider the potential conversations when a member of the most senior part of our community performs on the same stage as perhaps a grade school student, or a lifelong Vermonter tells a story or two, followed by the performance of an ethnic dance with roots in another part of the world.
The arts have a way of expressing one’s truest self, while putting us in a position of great vulnerability as we await the response of our audience. That honesty and vulnerability is almost universally met with applause and respect. It is that experience that the Knights hope to make available to everyone in South Burlington, and it may be the greatest opportunity of all.
