Thursday February 14, 2013

As a follow up to our story on page 6 of the January 31, 2013 edition of the Other Paper, the South Burlington Veterans Memorial Committee is pleased to announce several additional opportunities for the community to assist our efforts in raising the remaining money needed to construct the South Burlington Veterans Memorial at Dorset Park.
The total cost of construction of the Memorial is estimated to be about $170,000.  Many local businesses are donating their goods and/or services on an in-kind basis, meaning, at no cost to us.  We are extremely grateful to them for their generous contributions to the construction of the Memorial.  Of the remaining costs that we must pay for, we are $25,000 to $40,000 away from our goal (pending finalization of a few in-kind donations).  We are about 80% (+/-) of where we need to be in order to begin construction!

Can you help us reach our goal so that we may begin construction of the Memorial this summer?

Here are some ways you can help:
Make a tax deductible donation to the Veterans Memorial Fund.  Cash or checks (made out to City of South Burlington - Veterans Memorial Fund) are accepted at the South Burlington Recreation Department, 575 Dorset Street, South Burlington, Vermont, 05403, 846-4108.

Purchase an Engraved Paver in the name of a Veteran (does not need to be a South Burlington resident or have fought in a war) you would like to honor.  Engraved pavers will be placed along the “Pathway of Honor” at the Memorial and cost $75 (for a 4x8”) and $150 (for an 8x8”).  More information on the pavers is found at the South Burlington Recreation & Parks Department, on our website at www.sbremembers.org or by contacting Lisa Levite at lisalevite@comcast.net or 860-1506.

Plan on attending a charity “celebrity” hockey game!  A hockey game between Champlain Valley Union High School and South Burlington High School teachers and staff will be held at Cairnes Arena (at Dorset Park) on Saturday, February 23, 2013, and will be scheduled between the CVU/SBHS girls and boys hockey games (approximately 6 p.m.).  Proceeds from the raffle tickets sold prior to and at this game will be donated to the South Burlington Veterans Memorial Fund.  For more details and information, please contact Patrick Burke, Principal, SBHS, pburke@sbschools.net or 652-7001.

Plan on participating in the 15th annual South Burlington Rotary Golf Tournament, which will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Vermont National Country Club, on Dorset Street in South Burlington.   The South Burlington Rotary Club has generously named the South Burlington Veterans Memorial as their benefit charity for this popular event. Grab three of your friends and enroll as a foursome!  Title and Major sponsorships, as well as tee, green and golf cart sponsorships are also available.  Donated goods and services are also being accepted for inclusion in the silent auction.  Contact South Burlington Rotary member Don Jenkins for more information, dwjenkins7@comcast.net  or 233-2676.

Would your employer consider naming the South Burlington Veterans Memorial as the benefit charity of a fundraiser that they sponsor, or would they make a donation to the Memorial Fund?  Contact Veterans Memorial member Jay Zaetz at jlmvz@myfairpoint.net or 658-3494 for more information.

The Veterans Memorial at Dorset Park is a fitting tribute to the men and women, past and present, who have served our country with honor.  This is a Memorial for everyone in our community to enjoy.  The Memorial will consist of three separate structures placed around a “Pathway of Honor” to venerate all veterans and create a place to provide a meaningful experience to visitors.  More information about the Memorial may be found at our website, www.sbremembers.org or by calling the South Burlington Recreation & Parks Department at 846-4108 and asking them to send you a brochure.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our community for your continued support of our fundraising efforts for the Memorial.  We encourage you to take part in the fundraising efforts if you are able and help us complete the Memorial.
