Dozens of community members braved the wind, embraced the sun, and gathered for the 5K Walk/Run for Cannon on November 11 to remember beloved South Burlington High School science teacher, George Cannon, and to raise money for the memorial fund created in his memory.
The event was organized by a group of South Burlington High School seniors as part of their PIWA (Public Issues and World Affairs) class: Carey Austin, Sam Barritt, Olivia Ferro, Robin Khorrami, Raina Langevin, and Sam Parizo.
“I couldn’t believe the amount of participation we had,” marveled Mr. Barritt. “We expected a small event, and we saw the community come together for something bigger than we could imagine. What a day!”
“I think the most meaningful thing about the day was the people who came,” added Ms. Langevin. “The walkers, the runners, the volunteers who took time out of their day were what made this event possible.”
“Mr. Cannon was the best teacher I’ve ever had,” reflected Ms. Ferro, “so doing this in his honor was a powerful experience. There was a huge turnout! I’m sure Mr. Cannon was smiling down at all of us that day.”
