The South Burlington Community Library is excited to present the classical woodwind quintet, Windsong, Sunday, March 13, at 2 p.m. This year, in addition to their programming for adults, the quintet will feature the beloved children’s classic Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. The arrangement will be narrated by Walter Parker, Senior Music Host and Producer of WVPR, Vermont Public Radio. The concert is part of the winter concert series at the library, which is located at 540 Dorset Street.
Following Peter and the Wolf, families are invited to stay for the second half, or to enjoy crafts and activities in the SBCL’s Children’s Room. Refreshments will be available after the concert, courtesy of the South Burlington Friends of the Library.
After Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Windsong will play two brief contrasting pieces, one by Englishman Sir Edward Elgar and the other by French composer Adrien Barthe. Also, as part of the program, the group will perform Brevities by the Bay for Wind Quintet, composed by longtime Vermont resident Gwyneth Walker and inspired by her trip to the seaside. The program will finish with a performance of one of the many woodwind quintets composed by German composer and friend of Beethoven, Franz Danzi.
The Windsong quintet musicians are Lois Price, flute; Kari Anderson, oboe; Wesley Christensen, clarinet; Julie Wolfe, bassoon; and Susan O’Daniel, French horn. The group will also be performing this concert Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at the Bixby Memorial Free Library in Vergennes. Both concerts are free and open to the public.
