The South Burlington Rotary Club has selected South Burlington High School students Alex Pasanen and Samantha Wulfson as “outbound” exchange students for the 2013-2014 school year.  Alex, currently a sophomore, will be going to France this summer for a short-term exchange and Samantha, a graduating senior, will be going to Argentina for the full year exchange. As this is an exchange program, the Pasanen family will be hosting a child from France this summer and the South Burlington community, starting with the Wulfson family, will be hosting a student from Ecuador in “exchange” for Sam through the 2013-2014 school year. Sam and Alex attended an orientation for “outbound” students in Waterbury in early June with 4 other students sponsored by other Rotary Clubs in Vermont and Quebec.

The Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a program sponsored by Rotary International, and offered by the South Burlington Rotary Club to students in the community. SB Rotary has partnered with SBHS for many years in both sending and hosting students in this program.  The purpose of RYE is to present opportunities for high school students to advance their education, experience new cultures, learn another language and contribute to world understanding.  This is accomplished through experiences gained by attending school while living with host families in a different country. When participating in the exchange, students benefit from the sponsorship, supervision and support of the local host Rotary Club.

During the 2012-2013 school year, SB Rotary sponsored two SBHS students in full year exchanges and hosted two students at the high school. These four young people had life changing experiences through the opportunity to live in different countries and formed friendships for life.

Host families are needed from the community for the “incoming” RYE student – a female student from Ecuador. Students and families interested in learning more about RYE or in becoming a host family for the incoming young student may contact SB Rotarian Penne Tompkins  (penarts.tompkins@gmail.com).
