SB Students Receive Accolades at Rice

Four Rice Memorial High School students from South Burlington were recognized recently for their academic and musical achievements at the school’s annual Underclassmen Awards ceremony.

Owen Lyons, a rising senior, received The Junior Excellence in Mathematics Award, recognizing a talented student who studied AP Calculus this year as a junior. Lyons was also awarded the Bausch and Lomb Science award and is now being considered for a Bausch and Lomb Science Scholarship worth at least $7,500. Students receiving this award have shown academic excellence in three years of science, rigor of courses taken in the sciences, and high standardized test scores in math and science. In addition, Lyons was recognized for his leadership in the Rice Chorus and A Capella Chorale with the Male Excellence in Vocal Music Award. Lyons was also acknowledged as one of this year’s candidates for the National Merit Scholarship Program offered to high school juniors. Finally, Lyons is one of four male juniors representing Rice at Boys’ and Girls’ State, an annual event designed to give high school juniors valuable citizenship training and understanding of the duties, privileges, and rights and responsibilities for American Citizenship.

Julia Wagner, a rising junior, was recognized for representing Rice at the four-day Hugh O’Bryan Youth Leadership Seminar held at St. Michael’s College. This is a leadership seminar involving high school sophomores from around Vermont.

Zachary Zuk, a rising senior, received the Saint Michael’s College Book Award which recognizes outstanding students who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership in their community service endeavors.

Katie Bernhardt, a rising senior, received the “Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award” through The University of Rochester.
