September 30th, as part of the Homecoming Weekend festivities, the third class of the Rebel Athletic Hall of Fame was formally inducted at an event hosted at the Sunset Ballroom. The evening began with a social hour followed by a buffet dinner. David Young, superintendent, welcomed everyone followed by our emcee, Mike Donoghue, a 1969 graduate of South Burlington High School and award-winning news and sports writer with The Burlington Free Press, who began the ceremony portion of the event by introducing each inductee. Donoghue highlighted each inductee’s accomplishments through their high school sports careers after which each inductee was presented with a plaque and had a chance to speak upon acceptance of their award. The inductees spoke of their memories growing up in South Burlington, their families, coaches and special sports seasons during their high school years. Some lighthearted stories, many special memories and a bit of history regarding the development of our first sports teams in 1961 all highlighted the evening. Inductees, their families and special guests traveled from afar to be in attendance with over one hundred attendees; there were many reconnections made with former classmates and coaches.
Our 3rd Rebel Hall of Fame class covered all five decades of South Burlington High School which opened in September 1961, a highlight for the schools 50th year. There were five women (Kathryn Vinson ’95, Katie O’Brien ’91, Tammy Hussels ’86, Becca Bright Pugh ’91, Sara Houghaboom Higgins ’81) and six men (Garry Jordan ’85, Mark Brigham ’72, Greg Picard ’76, Mike Smullen ’72, Lester Ravlin ’63 and Nicholas J. Methot ’01 inducted posthumously) inducted and many of our athletes has also played sports in college. Many inductees attribute their personal, career and athletic successes in life to what they learned while at South Burlington High School.
