Green Up Day: Saturday, May 2

May 2, 2015 will mark the 45th Green Up Day in the State of Vermont! The South Burlington Land Trust is again organizing the day of clean up for South Burlington. After an especially punishing winter (is it over yet?), everyone will be eager to get out there and tidy up our roads and fields and streams with friends and family.

The South Burlington Green Up Day Headquarters will be the parking lot at City Hall (575 Dorset St.) as usual. Volunteers will be available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help stow your trash into the trucks (donated by Public Works) and dumpsters (donated by Clean Green Sanitation) and register for prizes. There will be exhibits and free food (from Vermont Coffee Company, Healthy Living, and Trader Joe’s) and a big map where we will track our progress.

A special feature of the prizes this year is the generous donation of two bare root trees given by Branch Out Burlington. These trees will be awarded to the winners of the “Most Trash Collected” & “Most Unusual Item Found” contests and will require immediate planting. Several South Burlington businesses have donated other great items for the runner-up prizes. Trader Joe’s will give a free reusable shopping bag to anyone visiting their store on May 2, if they are wearing a Green Up Day T-shirt (from any year).

If you would like to organize a work group or civic organization to work together greening up an area, please call team organizer Karen Ryder at 802-864-8206. We can suggest a spot for you to Green Up or you can pick your own place. A number of teams have already signed up including the Cub Scouts, GE Healthcare and GE retirees, Pepsi Beverages, Vermont Federal Credit Union, South Burlington High School students and others.

If you are going to work solo or with your family, please call Sarah Dopp at 802-985-3581 so we can keep track of the areas being covered and therefore cover more territory.

Bags will be available at City Hall before May 2 or on Green Up Day at the Headquarters in the parking lot. We always have a great turnout and this year will be bigger and better than ever! But only with your help.

“Most Trash Collected” and “Most Unusual Item Found” Wins a Tree!
