Governor Peter Shumlin awarded Melissa Pasanen of South Burlington, the first SMART Buzz Award at the 30th Annual Vermont Travel Industry Conference in Stowe, Vt. on April 3. The Governor’s SMART Awards for Marketing Excellence in Social Media for Arts, Recreation, and Tourism honor a tourism-related business, region, association or special event (SMART Biz) and travel journalist or blogger (SMART Buzz) that has leveraged the Vermont brand through social media marketing.
“Today’s awards call attention to innovative social campaigns right here in our state that outreach and connect with the hearts and minds of their customers,” Commissioner of Tourism and Marketing Megan Smith said.
The SMART Buzz award was given to freelance writer Melissa Pasanen for her Twitter handle @TasteofVermont.
“Melissa’s Twitter effort is everything you want this award to embody and more. Though she is a professional journalist well known in Vermont media, this Twitter effort is not promoting anything but love of Vermont and Vermont food and culture. This is her personal passion and she’s sharing it with the Twitterverse,” Smith said. “By blending sweet retweets about great Vermont edibles and events with links to articles in the Burlington Free Press, Vermont Life and VPR radio commentaries on Vermont and other topics, @TasteofVermont is a knowledgeable source of info on food trends and issues both in Vermont and more broadly halos back on the leading edge of Vermont’s food-farming brand attribute.”
