Overturned milk tanker

An overturned milk tanker on the side of I-89 closed the Dorset Street exit on Christmas Day.

The Vermont State Police reported that a milk tanker flipped onto its side at approximately 5:28 p.m. on Dec. 25 on Interstate 189 East, near the Dorset Street exit.

South Burlington Fire Department and Williston Police responded to the crash of the commercial vehicle owned and operated by McDermotts Inc. of Enosburg. After first contacting and damaging several hundred feet of guardrail, the tanker went off the north side of I-89 and flipped onto its side in a ditch adjacent to the road. The tanker was hauling approximately 54,000 pounds of raw milk, a large amount of which spilled out. The interstate and the Dorset Street exit were closed for over 90 minutes and traffic was diverted to I-89 South while the truck was removed, and the spill addressed by a Hazmat team. The operator was not injured. The crash is still under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Vermont State Police.
